Graphic designer Matthew Dent has created a stunning new design for the reverse of the coin. Cleverly combining a contemporary technique with a Victorian image, it features the well-known profile of Dickens created out of type, made up of the titles of some of his works from his early writings ‘Sketches by Boz’ to his final, unfinished novel, ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood.’ The edge of this double-thickness Piedfort £2 coin is inscribed with an uplifting quote, from Dickens’ own favourite story, ‘David Copperfield.’ It is the voice of the lovable and irrepressible Mr Micawber saying ‘SOMETHING WILL TURN UP’.
The obverse shows the elegant effigy of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, which has been used on all legal tender UK coinage since 1998.
