Prince Philip’s 90th birthday this year provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a truly remarkable man. As royal consort, he has given a life of service to the nation and the Royal Mint is proud to honour him with a commemorative UK £5 coin.
A special portrait was commissioned from Mark Richards, one of Britain’s finest portrait sculptors, whose idea was to convey the Duke of Edinburgh as a man of great personal warmth explaining: ‘I have composed the work as a close up rather than as a distant figurehead and, in the modelling of the portrait, emphasised his reliability, support and gentle nature.’
The result is a splendid coin with a faithful likeness of Prince Philip in his 90th year. The obverse features the current effigy of the Queen created by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS to make a coin that, for the first time in British history, features a monarch and consort on opposite sides.
The gold Proof £5 coin is truly impressive; the sheer size of the coin has provided the artist with a spacious canvas on which to work while the lustre of red gold and Proof quality has given the portrait a warm, lifelike quality. Beautifully presented, it comes with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
