A celebration of Britain

The Celebration of Britain Weather Silver Coin

London 2012 LogoAs a lasting tribute to Britain’s unpredictable weather, the British Weather £5 coin is the perfect gift for those with an interest in British natural history, to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and celebrate Britain’s pride in our heritage.

As Britain gears up for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Royal Mint is celebrating achievements from our heritage with the release of 18 sterling silver Proof coins. Each of the £5 coins features the London 2012 logo in colour on the reverse while the Queen’s portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS graces the obverse.

The image of a weather vane on this £5 coin represents the nation’s quirky preoccupation with the weather.

The inscription, ‘Never may a cloud come o’er the sunshine of your mind’, by the early nineteenth-century English novelist and poet, Charlotte Brontë, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters and whose most notable work is Jane Eyre, can be seen as defining the feeling of success and positive attitude the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring to the athletes and to those watching the Games around the world.

The weather has always been a major talking point in Britain, the rapid changes of weather from one day to the next, whatever the season, giving the nation a good enough reason for their renowned preoccupation.
