A Vintage Year for The Royal Mint's Flagship Coin

The Maturing Story of The Sovereign

The Sovereign is The Royal Mint's flagship coin. Throughout its history, it has borne a portrait of the current monarch on the obverse - or more than one portrait, as significant changes were marked during longer reigns. 2015 is the last opportunity to own a Sovereign with the fourth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II - making it highly desirable for collectors around the world.

About the coin

The Sovereign's iconic design of St George slaying the dragon is an enduring symbol of strength and continuity that has appeared regularly ever since it was first introduced in 1817. But St George is not the only story The Sovereign tells: the coinage portraits of Britain's monarchs have an equally important role, bearing witness to the nation's history in an ever-changing story that began in 1489.

Four years earlier, Henry Tudor had seized the throne at the battle of Bosworth Field - ending the Wars of the Roses and ushering in the Tudor dynasty. To celebrate the new stability in his realm, he announced a grand political gesture - a 'new coin of gold'.  The Tudors took The Sovereign to their hearts, though it was replaced by other gold coins under later monarchs. Reintroduced by George III, the coin and its portraits have since watched over changing dynasties and changing times, conflict and prosperity, reigns short and long.

During the reign of our current monarch Queen Elizabeth II, four coinage portraits have borne witness to some of the most remarkable social and economic changes in British history. Now  a fifth coinage portrait of Her Majesty is about to be introduced - making 2015 the last opportunity to own the final edition of the much-loved fourth coinage portrait, which was designed by the acclaimed British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, and first appeared in 1998.

Minted in a Limited Edition Presentation of 7,500 coins, The Sovereign 2015 comes in an elegant wooden display case with numbered Certificate of Authenticity plus a detailed booklet.

I received this coin within 3 days of ordering it. The coin is beautifully packaged in a very nice wooden box. It sits inside encased in in plastic to preserve the finish. I think it is a wonderful example of The Royal Mint coinage. I am so pleased with it.
