Britannia – the changing face of Britain - returns for 2014

Three stunning coins in one charming collection

Britannia returns for 2014 in a new interpretation by talented Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark. His design graces all the coins in the Britannia range but in this three-coin set the Quarter-Ounce, Tenth-Ounce and Twentieth-Ounce are united. Splendid in 999.9 fine gold Britannia is enhanced by our immaculate Proof finish. This wonderful set comes with a vibrant booklet on Britannia’s history and a Certificate of Authenticity. Only 150 sets are available.

History

Few characters are iconic enough to be reimagined time and time again, transformed through centuries of social and political evolution, even fewer become flagship coins of The Royal Mint. Britannia is one of these elite few, capturing the imagination of artists, historians and collectors, evolving with each representation to capture a moment in time for her nation.

Jody Clark’s design for 2014 is contemporary yet rich in imagery and fine details that simply gleam in the perfection of Royal Mint Proof finish. In a double show of British pride, Britannia is joined by the lion, tamed at her feet with its tail protectively swept around her robes, the pair an enduring display of courage and strength. These details are exquisite on the Quarter-Ounce, Tenth-Ounce and Twentieth-Ounce coins of this enticing set. All are struck in 999.9 fine gold and presented beautifully, for those who secure one of these 150 sets will undoubtedly wish to display and treasure them.

While the history books may reveal a wealth of famous men – kings, leaders and even mythical saints – females have long been celebrated on the coins produced by The Royal Mint, each telling a story, immortalising them forever. The obverse of coins traditionally featured the effigies of monarchs, and Her Majesty The Queen can be seen on Britain’s circulating currency, the fourth of her iconic coinage portraits. The queens that have gone before her were also captured on the coinage of their reigns. A young Queen Victoria graced wonderful £5 pieces in the Nineteenth century, her portrait on the obverse and an attractive depiction of her as Una on its reverse, leading a lion inspired by Edmund Spenser’s poem, The Faerie Queene. The resulting combination is undoubtedly one that blends the feminine with the masculine – the strong queen taming the unleashed might of the lion, a powerful display of strength and courage.
