Since its launch on 21 April 1983 the £1 has always represented the United Kingdom and its constituent parts; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The first £1coin showed a detailed and intricate image of the Royal Coat of Arms. Designed by Eric Sewell, Chief Engraver at The Royal Mint, it has become one of the most famous images on British coinage.
In 1988 a new design was created by Royal Mint engraver Derek Gorringe. Inspired by the Sovereigns of Queen Victoria, his elegant image shows a crowned shield of the Royal Arms on a plain background.
The third design, first issued in 2008, is by artist Matthew Dent, who won the commission in an open competition. His modern version of the shield of the Royal Arms fills the coin to dramatic effect.
Adding to the desirability of this stunning set is that it is the only way to own the Sewell and Gorringe £1 gold Proof coins dated 2013. With a very low issue limit of just 100 there is every chance these gold Proof sets will sell out, so please order today to secure yours.
