The Lucky Silver Penny

Everyone loves to bestow a special gift on a newborn baby, whether it is to celebrate their birth or as a special christening present. Silver has been given to babies and children as a symbol of good luck for centuries; and this coin from The Royal Mint lets you to continue this tradition but in a new way. The silver penny is marked with the year 2013, marking the important year of the little boy’s birth.

It has been struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard, making it a truly beautiful baby gift. The coin comes housed in a drawstring pouch that, in turn, is held in a pleasingly illustrated gift card. Both of these are in the charming pale blue associated with newborn baby boys, making it the perfect birth or christening gift for sons, grandsons, nephews, brothers or any special little boy you know.

The gift card also has room for you to pen your own welcome message to the newborn, making it a truly personal baby gift that will be valued for a lifetime.

About the Coin

The penny is one of the most regonisable and important coins in Britain. On the obverse, it bears the portrait of Her Majesty, while the design on the reverse forms part of the shield of the Royal Arms. Portions of this design feature on all of the UK coins ranging from the 1p to the 50p, and appears in is full glory on the iconic £1 coin.

Matthew Dent, the designer of the reverse of the coin, gave the following reason for why he chose the shield of the Royal Arms as the recurring theme for his designs: ‘heraldry has been the basis of coinage design in Britain for hundreds of years’. The Royal Arms are divided into four parts. England is symbolised by the famous three lions in the first and fourth quarters, the lion in the second quarter represents Scotland, and the symbolic harp of Ireland resides in the third quarter of the shield.

J. Young

By Julie,

I am very thankful to get my "Lucky Silver Penny" along with a blue pouch. I was disappointed that this coin did not come in a plastic coin case. I do love the cute little pouch that was created to go along with this coin, but my coin was in the pouch in a small plastic bag.... I do believe with the high currency I paid for this item this should have a better protector than a tiny ziploc bag!!!!

Was delighted with this. It is a lovely keepsake that my son can tresure and pass on. And a lovely way to mark his birth.
Coin is presented in a lovely little blue bag with a card that has space for your own additional message.

I would recommend This to anyone who has had a baby This year or is struggling to find a gift for someone who has, they will treasure.
