Traditionally, silver Piedfort coins were issued as gifts for princes, and today are still only issued occasionally. It is fitting, therefore, that the 50p coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten has been issued as a Piedfort. Struck up to three times using hand-polished dies the detail can be seen with astonishing clarity.
The harmonious typographical design celebrates Britten’s work with words from one of his works. Sure to appeal to music lovers and coin collectors, it is first time a composer has featured on a UK coin and the first 50p to show both date and denomination on the obverse.
