London 2012 Silver Kilo

Never before has The Royal Mint struck a silver UK coin weighing one kilogram.  For this world-first, an impressive design has been created by Tom Phillips RA, one of Britain’s foremost artists evoking the passion, glory and team spirit of the Olympic Games. This highly desirable coin is a treasure for coin collectors, Olympic memorabilia collectors and art lovers.

We are delighted to have worked with Tom Phillips on the creation of this ground-breaking new coin, a work of art in its own right. The internationally lauded artist is best known for ‘A Humument’, an ongoing work painted onto pages from a novel in which pieces of text are revealed to create a new story. It is fitting therefore that his coin design features a stunning signature font and the uplifting text ‘Unite our dreams to make the world a team of teams’.

The 2012 Silver Kilo Coin design also incorporates elements suggesting Olympic pennants and the Olympic Flame, to represent the highest ideals of the Games as a uniting force for good.

On the reverse is the familiar portrait of Her Majesty The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, which has appeared on all UK legal tender coins since 1998. It is dated 2012 and carries the denomination of the coin - 500 pounds.

Simply Stunning!

This is the most stunning coin I have ever purchased from the Royal Mint. From the amazing design by Tom Phillips, the pinpoint finish of the striking, the presentation box (if box can justify the case) and the sheer weight of everything, both in terms of actual weight and gravitas, the London 2012 Silver Kilo Coin is a masterpiece befitting the 30th Olympiad.
