An important royal event must be recorded for the nation – and with the new heir to the throne safely delivered we have turned to our flagship coin to mark the auspicious day of the birth. On the very day of the birth we struck just 2,013 Sovereigns, especially for collectors. And as three-quarters of this year’s Sovereigns have already been allocated, this extremely limited issue is almost guaranteed to sell out.
The Royal Mint has for centuries commemorated the most historic royal events, but for the first time we mark a royal birth. The Sovereign is perhaps the most royal of coins, created for Henry VII in Tudor times and named for the monarch. As we welcome the future sovereign it is fitting that this majestic coin plays its part in the celebrations. On the day of the birth we struck a limited number of Sovereigns – 2,013 to be exact, reflecting the birth year of the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Since Tudor times the Sovereign has been so closely linked with the king or queen – Henry VII would gift the coin to envoys from overseas intended to convey the strength of a new Tudor dynasty. Today, the Sovereign bears the famous St George and the dragon design first created by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817. Some 200 years since it was created the design stands as a classic, renowned the world over and considered a mark of quality and reliability. It appears once more on the Sovereigns of 2013, what better reminder of this important royal date?
Here the Sovereign is minted in 22 carat gold. Just 2,013 coins share the royal birthday and they are available exclusively from The Royal Mint. They are a wonderful memento of the royal birth, and are perfect for any precious moment that deserves the gift of glorious gold.
