An artful fusion of Chinese and British Heritage

The UK’s first Lunar coins

The first in a new series from The Royal Mint the Lunar Year of the Horse 2014 UK One Ounce Silver Proof coin begins the auspicious Shēngxiào Collection. Inspired by centuries of tradition and created by British-born Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho, the coin features a dynamic horse design to beautifully unite Chinese and British heritage. With the gleaming perfection of Proof finish and a most impressive full ounce of 999 fine silver this coin is quite remarkable and will no doubt be popular with collectors and those honouring Chinese New Year tradition alike.

The Royal Mint’s Lunar coins lend a new British angle to ancient customs. They are a perfect choice to wish good fortune and an auspicious year to the recipient, to continue the gifting tradition seen at Lunar New Year or to begin a beautiful new collection. The first legal tender Lunar coin struck for the United Kingdom by The Royal Mint begins an auspicious series: the Shēngxiào Collection, which honours the Chinese zodiac and a wealth of tradition.

The first coin of the Shēngxiào Collection to be released is that struck for the Lunar Year of the Horse. Wuon-Gean Ho, a British Chinese artist and printmaker, has created a design that combines a powerful horse paired with the famous Uffington Horse, an ancient white horse carved into the chalk hills of Oxfordshire, at its feet. The design gleams in the immaculate definition afforded by fine silver and our unrivalled Proof finish. With only  8,888 coins, each containing one full ounce of our finest 999 silver available, the Lunar Year of the Horse 2014 UK One Ounce Silver Proof coin will be highly sought after.
