‘How to work with Britannia and make her a contemporary image and not just appear nationalistic?’ was the challenge David Mach set himself when asked to create a new portrait of Britannia for 2011 coins. It was a question answered brilliantly for, marrying Britannia’s long history with modern values, he has created a Britannia that reaches into the very heart of British consciousness, a symbol of enduring patriotism, seated among the billowing folds of the Union Flag.
The four sister coins in the Gold Proof Britannia family of 2011, including the wonderfully impressive £100 coin – exclusive to this set – each features Britannia’s new portrait. Minted in 22 carat yellow gold to Proof quality and splendidly presented, the coins come complete with a Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing that no more than 1,000 sets will ever be issued.
The Britannia gold collection for 2011 is now available with each of the four companion coins bearing the very patriotic portrait of Britannia by David Mach RA. All four coins, the highest denomination coins of the realm, are struck in 22 carat yellow gold to glorious Proof quality – the large £100 coin contains a full ounce of gold, the £50 a half-ounce, the £25 and £10 a quarter-ounce and tenth ounce respectively. The family comes in a handsome presentation case with a uniquely numbered Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing the issue limit of just 1,250 sets*.
