Commemorating the world’s first underground railway

London Underground ‘Train’ Design

On 10 January 1863 the first section of the London Underground opened, an engineering triumph and a world first.

This Silver Proof £2 coin celebrates the 150th anniversary with a design of a train hurtling through a tunnel. Perspectives and textures reflect the light to create a sense of movement, and the gold-plated outer edge  forms the tunnel wall. Presented in a smart display case, the coins and booklet were developed with experts at Transport for London and the London Transport Museum.

About the Coin

So special is this anniversary that not one but two coins have been issued to go into circulation. Designed by leading UK designers, you can also buy a set of both Silver Proof coins in a limited edition of just 1,500.

The ‘Train’ coin was created by the internationally-acclaimed duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, best-known for the London 2012 Olympic Torch. The front cab shown on the coin is a 1967 Victoria line Tube train. An unusual edge inscription pattern is inspired by Harry Beck’s 1938 iconic Tube map.

The companion Silver Proof £2 ‘Roundel’ coin is designed by Edwina Ellis, a pioneering printmaker and former ‘Art on the Underground’ artist. Her design, featuring the famous logo which was introduced in1908 is inspired by the 1938 poster by Man Ray which showed the famous logo floating in space.

Also available in Gold Proof, Silver Piedfort Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated, these 150th anniversary coins are sure to delight coin collectors, Londoners and transport enthusiasts alike.
