Three of the UK’s leading artists were chosen to design the 150th anniversary coins, which come in a smart black display case.
Edwina Ellis, creator of the ‘Roundel’ coin, is a pioneering printmaker and former ‘Art on the Underground’ artist. Her design is inspired by the 1938 poster by Man Ray which features the famous logo floating in space. It also has lettering in the Johnston font used in Underground stations and an edge inscription that reads MIND THE GAP.
The ‘Train’ £2 coin was designed by the internationally-acclaimed design duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, best known for the design of the London 2012 Olympic Torch. Their coin shows a 1967 Victoria line Tube train hurtling from a tunnel, and uses texture and perspectives to reflect the light and create a sense of movement. It also carries an unusual edge pattern inspired by Harry Beck’s iconic Tube map.
Also available in limited edition Gold Proof and Silver Proof sets and individual coins, as well as the Brilliant Uncirculated two-coin set, these 150th anniversary coins are sure to delight serious collectors, Londoners and transport enthusiasts alike.
