Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the world’s first underground railway with this new £2 coin featuring the famous London Underground logo. Piedforts are treasured for their craftsmanship and rarity, as these superior double-thickness coins with gold plating are only struck to mark very special events. Supplied in a smart display case, it was developed with the London Transport Museum and Transport for London and comes with a colour booklet of stories of the Underground
So special is this anniversary that, unusually, not one but two circulating coins have been issued. You can buy both as a set of two Silver Proof Piedfort coins in a limited edition of just 1,500.
The coins were designed by three of the UK’s leading artists. Edwina Ellis, creator of this ‘Roundel’ coin, is a pioneering printmaker and former ‘Art on the Underground’ artist. Her design, featuring the famous logo which first appeared in 1908 carries the edge inscription MIND THE GAP and uses lettering in the unique Johnston typeface used for London Underground signage.
The companion Silver Proof Piedfort £2 ‘Train’ coin, , was designed by the internationally-acclaimed duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, best known for the design of the London 2012 Olympic Torch. It shows a dynamic image of a 1967 Victoria line Tube train and uses textures and perspectives to reflect the light and create a sense of movement.
