A new chapter in the 2,000-year history of a British icon

For centuries Britannia has represented Britain, first appearing on Roman coins and reimagined time after time on the coins of every British monarch since Charles II. In 1987 she gave her name to a new, most important, coin, sister to the Sovereign. And in 2013 Britannia begins a new page in her history as the changing face of Britain: showcasing the best British artists, struck in our purest precious metals and with new denominations including this stunning, high relief, Silver Proof Five-Ounce Coin.

2,000 years ago, at the far reaches of the Roman Empire, Britannia was born. Over centuries she has represented this island nation, personifying Britain in female form: warrior queen, watchful guardian, ruler of the waves, always the changing face of Britain. She has appeared on the coins of British monarchs since 1672, and in 1987 a new coin was struck, bearing her portrait and her name: Britannia.

Britannia: our premier silver coin

From 2013 the Britannia range will be minted in even finer precious metals, including our purest .999 silver. Britannia bullion coins will carry the original standing portrait of Britannia by Philip Nathan. But Britannia Proof coins will feature a different design each year. She is the ultimate British symbol – designed by a British artist, approved by the Queen and struck by The Royal Mint. This Five-Ounce Silver Proof Coin – a full five ounces of fine silver  – is a hugely impressive first for the Britannia range: the first of the new coins, the first Britannia Five-Ounce coin and the first Britannia to be struck in high relief.

Britannia has always reflected Britain’s position, strengths and aspirations, and as she has been reimagined over time she has earned her reputation as the changing face of Britain. The 2013 Britannia artist, Robert Hunt, has created a graceful Britannia, seated in traditional pose, robed in the classical tradition and with Corinthian helmet and Neptune’s trident to represent her claim as ‘ruler of the waves.’ But his Britannia turns her head, a listening pose that indicates she is open to a world beyond Britain, the owl that accompanies her is a symbol of her wisdom.

So closely tied with the coinage is Britannia that she is protected by law – only coins struck by The Royal Mint are genuine Britannia coins. Collectors will be very keen to secure these first new five-ounce coins. Only 1,150 of them will be able to add one to their exclusive collections, for the issue of these premium coins, with luxurious presentation, is strictly limited.
