More than just a coin

What you get with your coin

The coinage reform following the Battle of Waterloo re-introduced the Sovereign and also saw the origin of what was destined to become one of the most enduring of all numismatic designs – Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic rendering of St George and the dragon. That same design was used on all the gold £5 pieces of 1820; on the new Sovereign it was surrounded by a garter, whilst on the large £5 coin it was allowed to fill the entire field. A magnificent coin in its own right, the extremely rare proof specimens of 1820 bear the portrait of George III but were actually struck after the death of the old king.

The portrait of George III was also engraved by Pistrucci. Originally only 25 specimens were intended but some say that Pistrucci, on hearing of the King’s death, gave hasty orders for the striking of a few more.

The 2011 Brilliant Uncirculated £5 Gold Sovereign

The 2011 issue will be the last in the current run of Pistrucci’s design as next year we will see a new design specially created to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This makes the 2011 £5 Sovereign highly sought-after, especially following the sell-outs of the 2008, 2009 and 2010 issues.

One of the most highly anticipated annual issues from the Royal Mint is now available – the 2011 £5 Sovereign struck in 22 carat gold to Brilliant Uncirculated standard.

This spectacular gold coin has an extremely low mintage of just 1,000 pieces. The 2008, 2009 and 2010 £5 Sovereigns have all sold out, proving the enduring demand for this most limited of Sovereign issues. Each coin measures an impressive 36.02 millimetres in diameter and weighs a remarkable 39.94 grammes – the equivalent in gold content to five individual Sovereigns.

Benedetto Pistrucci’s rendition of St George and the dragon first appeared on the £5 gold Sovereign in 1820 and this same design again appears on the reverse of this year’s coin, with the obverse featuring the portrait of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. It is this consistent element that gives the Sovereign its enduring gravitas, credibility and desirability, while the exceptional beauty, rarity and high gold content combine to make the £5 Sovereign one of the most highly sought after coins throughout the numismatic world. This gold coin comes in a specially designed walnut display case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing its very limited edition and signed by the Chief Executive of the Royal Mint.
