Commemorating the world’s first underground railway

Official UK £2 coins for 2013

150th Anniversary of the London Underground 2013 UK £2 Two-Coin SetOn 10 January 1863 the world’s first underground railway opened in London. An engineering triumph, the 150th anniversary is being marked with not one but two new UK £2 coins for 2013.

The ‘Roundel’ £2 coin is inspired by the 1938 poster by Man Ray and depicts the world-famous London Underground logo, while the ‘Train’ £2 coin shows a Tube train hurtling out of a tunnel. Presented in a specially designed pack based on the iconic Tube map, no other memorabilia captures the spirit of London so well.

About the Coins

Both 150th anniversary coins were developed with experts at Transport for London and the London Transport Museum, and designed by three of the UK’s leading designers.

Edwina Ellis, creator of the ‘Roundel’ coin, is a pioneering printmaker and former ‘Art on the Underground’ artist, whose work appeared in stations in 1996. Her logo design coin has an edge inscription that reads MIND THE GAP.

150th Anniversary of the London Underground 2013 UK £2 Two-Coin SetThe ‘Train’ coin was designed by the internationally-acclaimed duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, best-known for the London 2012 Olympic Torch. Their dynamic coin image depicts a 1967 Victoria line Tube train and carries an unusual edge inscription inspired by Harry Beck’s Tube map,

The iconic packaging includes a large double-sided poster and features a close-up of Tower Hill station on the London Underground map, a  reference to The Royal Mint which was housed there from 1279 until the 1960s. It is very rare for two circulating coins to have the same theme, adding to the appeal of these stunning coins for collectors, Londoners and transport enthusiasts alike.
