The 2011 WWF - UK 50p Silver Proof Coin Open

Bringing People and Nature Together

The Royal Mint is proud to mark the 50th Anniversary of WWF with a commemorative 50p coin specially designed by Matthew Dent. The reverse design features the famous WWF Panda logo surrounded by symbols representing the vital work of WWF. Matthew Dent explains, ‘If you look closely, you'll see that the design features mammals, birds, fish, insects and lizards, fruit, seeds, trees and plants, and icons representing the human impact; farming, transport, renewable energy sources and the home.’

The organisation, the World Wildlife Fund, now known as just WWF, was created in April 1961 by a group of eminent wildlife experts who joined forces to tackle environmental problems across the world. The group included household names such as Sir Julian Huxley, the renowned biologist, and Sir Peter Scott, the distinguished naturalist and painter. Today, the work of WWF remains as relevant as it was during those early days. Safeguarding the natural world remains a priority, but WWF also works to identify ways to live more sustainably and to find positive solutions to the most serious challenges facing the planet.
