A 90th Birthday Portrait of a Duke

HRH The Prince Philip’s 90th birthday in 2011 was celebrated with the striking of a special £5 coin. Few people in Britain are more instantly recognisable than Prince Philip and it was therefore appropriate that his portrait by Mark Richards was chosen to appear on the reverse of the coin, while The Queen’s effigy features on the obverse.

Throughout their lives together, The Queen and Prince Philip have been involved with a great many charity and voluntary organisations. Today, Prince Philip is Patron or President of more than 700 organisations, his longest-standing association being with London Youth, while another famous organisation close to his heart is The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Prince Philip’s remarkable life of service and achievement with a UK £5 coin.
