Lunar Year of the Horse 2014

In 2014 The Royal Mint introduces The Shēngxiào Collection – a collection of Lunar coins that bring a British angle to a centuries-old tradition, and named to honour the Chinese Zodiac. The Shēngxiào relates each year to one of 12 animals, their traits attributed to those born in a given Lunar year. British Chinese artist and printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho begins this auspicious series in 2014. Her bold design for the Lunar Year of the Horse pairs a strong and agile horse with the famous British ‘chalk horse’ at Uffington, an artful combination of both British and Chinese heritage.

The giving of zodiac coins at Lunar New Year is an ancient custom said to bring good fortune to the recipient. Lunar coins from The Royal Mint are the perfect way to wish luck and prosperity to a loved one or respected acquaintance, to continue the tradition of exchanging gifts at Lunar New Year or to begin a charming new collection. This first, beautiful design is available in our finest silver or gold, struck either to Proof finish or sparkling Brilliant Uncirculated quality, and with denominations to suit every occasion, from the delicate Tenth-Ounce Gold Brilliant Uncirculated coin to the impressive Five-Ounce in fine silver. The coins are subject to strict issue limits – always including the lucky number eight – and are presented in refined red packaging, with a Certificate of Authenticity and booklet detailing the customs and traditions that have inspired this first UK Lunar coin. Coins from the Shēngxiào Collection will make a treasured gift at Lunar New Year, or for any special event in 2014.
