50th Anniversary of the Death of Sir Winston Churchill
There can be few people around the world who have not heard of Sir Winston Churchill, even half a century after his death. This was a man who was one of the greatest leaders of all time. He was twice Britain’s Prime Minister, he twice helped this country through the dark days of war, he fought on the battlefields and in politics for what he believed was right. He was a Nobel Laureate, he inspired admiration in great men and in the man in the street. He was a mentor to Her Majesty The Queen and a loving husband and father. He was all these things, and more.
On the death of Winston Churchill in 1965 The Royal Mint issued a coin that became a classic, the essence of this man captured by Oscar Nemon. In 2015 we issue a second coin – Sir Winston Churchill is the only man ever to be awarded this honour. Now you can own them both, paired in one stunning set, and appreciate just how the portrait on this £5 coin matches the artistry of that first portrait, the design by Mark Richards FRBS not confined by the limits of the coin, conveying the spirit of Winston Churchill as he was: larger than life.
