London 2012 Games
When Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, received the Olympic flag at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Games, our countdown to the Games began. For the
first time since 1948, the Olympic and Paralympic Games were on British soil and the nation's excitement was growing.
Around 10,500 Olympic athletes and 4,200 Paralympic athletes from 205 countries will take part in the London 2012 Games over the course of the summer. Over 9 million tickets will be available for spectators, who will travel from far and wide to be part of this, the most prestigious sporting competition in the world.
More than 300 events will take place during the two Games, at over 30 venues across Britain, including the new Olympic Stadium, Wembley Stadium, Hampden Park, the Millennium Stadium, Wimbledon, Lords, Earls Court, Hyde Park and Horseguard's Parade. At these sporting venues, plans are being made and the countdown has already begun.
