Celebrating 60 Glorious Years
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 will be a remarkable moment in our history, she being one of only two British monarchs – to have reigned for 60 years - the first being Queen Victoria.
The Official Queen's £5 Diamond Jubilee Coin
To celebrate this landmark occasion, the Royal Mint has struck a beautiful new coin uniting two portraits of Her Majesty The Queen. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee UK Silver proof Coin is fully approved by The Queen and the Treasury and is a great way to mark this once-in-a-lifetime royal event.
For the younger portrait, the inspiration has come from the very first portrait of The Queen by Mary Gillick, which appeared on coins from 1953. Fresh and evocative, it embraced a new Elizabethan era. The artist Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS describes the present portrait as having ‘dignity and gravitas’. His inspiration came from images of The Queen specially commissioned for the Royal Mint. This unique portrait will appear for one year only on the UK coins celebrating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
