Memorabilia for the London 2012 Olympic Games

When the Olympic Flame is extinguished at the Closing Ceremony on 12 August 2012, many people will choose to remember London 2012 with a tangible memento. A coin makes the perfect souvenir, because of its intrinsic value and quality which holds an interest and fascination for generations to come.

Olympic Coins

As the official commemorator of major British events, The Royal Mint has produced some outstanding new individual Olympic and Paralympic coins and coin collections, including the Countdown Collection, which marked the years leading up to the event, and the Gold Series featuring the iconic Olympic Rings on a theme of ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’, inspired by the official Olympic motto.

The Official Olympic £5 Coin

One coin which captures the essence of the London 2012 games is the Official Olympic £5 coin. Designed by architecture student Saiman Miah, it depicts the skyline of modern London, with the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben all rendered in spectacular detail. Around the edge are Pictograms of Olympic sports and the official London 2012 emblem Presented in a specially designed wallet, it is the ideal souvenir for those looking for a single Olympic coin rather than a collection.

The Official Paralympic £5 Coin

A companion London 2012 Paralympic £5 Coin is also available, struck to celebrate the Paralympic Games. Inspired by the circular images such as the Olympic Rings, medals and wheelchair wheels, designer Pippa Sanderson incorporated part of a spoked wheel to suggest manoeuvrability, a target to represent accuracy and a stopwatch suggesting speed, with the clock-face of Big Ben linking them to London.

Olympic souvenirs for every pocket

Both coins come in a range of qualities to suit every budget. At £14.99, the Brilliant Uncirculated version is highly affordable. At the top of the range, priced at £2,880, is the Official Olympic £5 Gold Proof Coin struck in 22 carat gold, a limited edition collector’s piece, destined to become an heirloom. Other limited editions of the Official Olympic £5 Coin include a sterling silver coin, a double-thickness silver Piedfort coin and a silver gold-plated version.

From the start, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games have focused on achieving a lasting legacy. Owning an Olympic or Paralympic £5 coin is the perfect way to acquire a lasting legacy of your own.
