A poignant gold five-ounce coin continues the series

As we reflect on the cost of war

Our journey from ‘Outbreak to Armistice’ continues as we remember the penultimate year of the First World War. At this point in the conflict both sides had reached a trench deadlock, demanding ever increasing numbers of men and artillery in an attempt to break through. This 999.9 fine gold coin, with a design by acclaimed sculptor Philip Jackson, tells the story of the sacrifices made in 1917 in the pursuit of peace.

Capturing the mood of 1917, this five-ounce coin features a thoughtful design from acclaimed sculptor Philip Jackson for 2017. Inspired by the poetry of Rudyard Kipling, the addition of oak leaves to the laurel wreath symbolises Britain and the victories won, while we are reminded of the human cost of war in the image of a lone soldier in silent reflection. The year-dated coin marks 100 years on from 1917 and has been struck in five ounces of 999.9 fine gold. Just 50 gold Proof editions will be struck, and each coin is accompanied by a booklet with imagery specially sourced by Imperial War Museums for this moving tribute.
