Five centuries ago, the very first British coins bearing a double portrait were struck, depicting Queen Mary and her husband, King Philip II of Spain.
Since then only four more such double effigies have been created. William and Mary on the 1692 Five-Guinea Piece; Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer on the 1981 Wedding Crown; The Queen and Prince Philip on the 1997 Golden Wedding Crown; and now, the new 2007 Diamond Wedding Silver Proof Crown, on which the Queen and Prince Philip can be seen looking confidently into the future.
The reverse design features the intricate yet striking contours of Emma Noble's design, inspired by the gothic lines of the north rose window in Westminster Abbey.
Reach back through time and imagine shafts of light streaming from this window to illuminate the young Princess Elizabeth as she was led down the aisle by her father, King George VI, to meet her husband-to-be, Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. Surrounding the design is the Latin inscription TVEATVR VNITA DEVS - 'May God guard these united.'
The polished edge bears the inscription 'MY STRENGTH AND STAY'. These words were taken from the Queen's speech marking her Golden Wedding anniversary, in which she paid tribute to her husband's continuing support.
