2007 Gold Bullion Half-Sovereign

Product code: UKBH07R
£75.00

This splendid 22 carat gold half-sovereign is an affordable route into ownership of one of the most famous coins in British numismatic history.

Polished to a sparkling finish it bears, on its reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci's neo-classical design of St George and the dragon.

The Royal Mint returned to Pistrucci's original die to create a model from which to strike this brand-new coin. The result is resplendent in fine detail, just as British subjects would have seen it in 1817.

  • Enhance your collection with a coin representing 200 years of continuous numismatic tradition

  • Secure one of only 75,000 such sovereigns being issued worldwide

  • Be confident of your coin's exclusivity, as verified by your individual Certificate of Authenticity.

  • As a gift

The 2007 Gold Bullion Half-Sovereign is an impressive way to celebrate an important event - maybe a retirement, anniversary or milestone birthday. By giving a gold half-sovereign you are also continuing a time-honoured tradition.

Product Information

The 2007 Gold Bullion Half-Sovereign depicts St George and the dragon on the reverse.

St George's sword was an 1818 amendment by Pistrucci, who wished to improve on his own original design, which featured a broken lance. Using a newly hand-prepared plaster model, the 2007 design has also restored the streamer to St George's helmet.

The obverse carries the familiar portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, FRBS.

Your coin is mounted on a full-colour illustrated presentation folder.

Background & History

'Nothing, in my opinion, is more handsome than the St George and Dragon.'
George Goschen, April 1890

In his heartfelt tribute to Pistrucci's classically elegant design, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer echoed popular sentiment. Today, coin collectors around the world would surely agree.

It was George Wellesley Pole, Master of the Mint, who commissioned his protg, Benedetto Pistrucci, to create the classic image of St George and the dragon.

Pistrucci already enjoyed a considerable reputation as a gem engraver. Basing his design on the legends of classical antiquity, he created a lasting image of courage, virtue and determination.
