Background & History

This collection provides a fascinating study of the seven monarchs of the Stuart era from the ascendancy of Charles I in 1625, through the insolvency of the Stuarts and the chaos of the English Civil War, to the Glorious Revolution which laid the foundation of the constitutional monarchy of modern-day Britain and, finally, to the Act of Union of 1707.

David Cornell FRSA has meticulously engraved the seven royal portraits and each portrait is accompanied by the Royal Arms of the period as well as an emblem associated with the Stuart dynasty, the Scottish thistle.

Professor Ivan Roots, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Exeter, joined the team to ensure the historical accuracy of the set and the accompanying documents.
