South Africa 2008: Krugerrand Gold Proof Four-Coin Set

Product code: SA08KRU4
£1850.00

Qty

The Royal Mint has obtained a limited number of gold Proof four-coin collections from South Africa. Comprising 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and, taking pride of place, the 1 oz coin, this handsome set of 22 carat gold Proof coins is restricted to an issue limit of only 1,000. As befits an issue of such high quality, each collection is presented in a handsome red presentation case and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The Krugerrand, one of the most well-known gold coins in the world, is named after Paul Kruger, the nineteenth-century Boer resistance leader, the fifth and last President of the South African Republic. His portrait appears on the obverse, while a graceful springbok antelope, one of the national symbols of South Africa, features on the reverse of each coin.

  • Acquire a superb four-coin set struck to Proof quality

  • Secure one of only 1,000 such sets to be issued worldwide

  • Be confident of the exclusivity of your collection as verified in your Certificate of Authenticity.

As a gift...

Whether it's a retirement, Golden Wedding anniversary, important birthday or similar milestone, the recipient of this impressive set will be left in no doubt of your love and regard. Imagine their smile of appreciation as they hold the largest Kruggerand coin in their hand: one full ounce of 22 carat gold.

Background & History

Paul Kruger was President between 1825 and 1904 and had a close affinity with the African countryside, founding the Kruger National Park.

  • The reverse design was used on the reverse of the earlier 5 shilling coinage for George VI and Elizabeth II

  • Krugerrands have been struck every year since 1967

  • The context in which the first Krugerrands were issued was one of social and racial conflict. The international community (through the Commission on Human Rights) condemned the actions of the South African Government as 'contrary to international law and international morality'. One such action was the 1967 Bill entitled the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages which effectively stated that marriage between a white South African man and a 'non-white' woman, even if married abroad, would not be recognised in South Africa. The UN describe the apartheid policies as 'a crime against humanity'.

  • The Springbok, or Springbuck, depicted on the reverse of the Krugerrand is the national animal of South Africa. The name comes from the habit of leaping into the air lightly and repeatedly

  • President Kruger, after whom the Krugerrand was named, had only three months formal education and was president when gold was discovered at Witwatersrand.
