The first coin in your collection features one of the most famous ships of all time, Henry VIII's Mary Rose. Originally equipped with seventy-eight guns and initially rated at 600 tons, it was the first of its kind to be able to fire a full broadside of cannons. This fine sailing carrack was built at Portsmouth between 1509 and 1511 and was designed to fight at close range. Sadly, on 19 July 1545 in a conflict with the French, Henry VIII watched as his favourite vessel sank with the loss of most of its crew. Over 400 years later, in 1982, the Mary Rose was raised and is now on display together with a fascinating array of weapons and artefacts in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
