Background & History

Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Paris in 1808, the nephew of Napoleon I and was to be the last monarch to rule France. He gave his country two decades of prosperity under a stable authoritarian government but finally led it to defeat in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71).
