Background & History

Hamilton's Frog is one of the most critically endangered native species. It is estimated that there could be as few as 300 adults in the wild today. Hamilton's Frog is widely believed to be the most ancient of all frogs and has unique characteristics. This native New Zealand frog does not live in water habitats and prefers a range of forest ebvironments which, over time, has led to the loss of webbing between its toes. Unlike other species, Hamilton's Frog also has limited vocal capabilities.

New Zealand native frogs are unique in the way that they breed, because tey do not go through a tadpole stage. Instead they develop totally within a gelatinous capsule derived from an egg. This amphibian is the largest of all four of New Zealand's native frogs. The only place where is is known to be living in the wild is among a tiny rock outcrop on Stephen's Island is being carefully monitored by New Zealand's Department of Conservation through the creation of a predator-free environment. In recent years a small number of Hamilton's Frogs were moved to another island with a similar habitat to ensure the survival of this endangered native species.
