Background & History

Arnold Machin was born in 1911 into a large family of pottery workers in the heart of North Staffordshire. His inherited skills were evident at a young age and he won a scholarship to Derby Art School and another to The Royal College of Art. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1956 and is renowned for his unique terracotta sculptures. His beautiful portrait of the Queen prepared for the new decimal coinage was adapted by the Royal Mail in 1967 and is still in use on British stamps.

The new decimal coinage brought with it a new portrait of the Queen and it was the artist and sculptor Arnold Machin, RA, who was commissioned to undertake the task. His beautiful portrait of the Queen prepared for the new decimal coinage was first used on British coins from 1968.
