Background & History

The centuries-old tradition of hallmarking is Europe's earliest form of consumer protection which means that, by law, every item made of platinum, gold or silver must bear a series of marks made by an Assay Office.

The official hallmark that appears on these precious metal items offered by the Royal Mint this year comprises the following marks: The Rose or Leopard's Head - signifying the Assay Offices of Sheffield and London respectively; a 'j' representing 2008; 375 or 925 as the fineness of the gold or silver; and AJS - the initials of the sponsor Andrew Stafford, the Deputy Master of the Royal Mint. In addition, the unique Royal Mint Tower mark, which alludes to the Royal Mint's residency at the Tower of London, is also included.
